Failing Resolutions 101

One of my numerous New Years Resolutions:
To get more organized—not just with my stuff but in the management of my time (this should probably include not playing around on the internet so much, yes?) and the running of my household (I know…so lame)

Current Resolution Status:
For eleven weeks I’ve been rolling this stuff around in my head, trying to make sense of just what it is I want to accomplish and also, more recently, to assess what I’ve accomplished thus far. Well, heh, that second part is gonna be a preeeeety short paragraph because right now, I have more excuses than progress to report. (See? See? Another psychological roadblock to actually getting stuff done…the old “I already know I’m not good at this, so no need to document” excuse. Gah. I am REALLY NO GOOD at this.)

Ohhh man. This is too hard. Maybe a nap and then we write? Yes? Pleeease?

No? *sigh*

Okay, I’ve been busying myself (because, you know, I have sooo much time to fill and not nearly enough tasks) with reading articles on the internet (THE SOURCE OF ALL KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM) about getting organized, staying organized, and fighting clutter.

The problem? These articles are so…dry. So fact-filled. So utilitarian. So designed-to-actually-help. BLEH! There’s nothing sexy about decluttering in ANY of them. No earth-shatteringly easy secrets to organization that I could employ without even trying, either. And frankly? A distinct lack of of cute acronyms that I could actually remember in the heat of a clutter battle. Who writes this crap?

So yeah, I’ve been on this semi-passive quest for the holy grail of self-help materials; the quest for THE PLAN that will work best for me. That’s lazy person code for…the plan for which I have to merely breathe and be upright in order to execute effectively. As noted, I’m not having much luck—my life is still not organized, my time is still being squandered and frankly, all this domesticity is killing me or maybe its just the laundry…I’m not sure.

I don’t know how all those blissfully domestic folks do it. The more I try to be pro-active and get caught up and be on the ball about stuff and just…DO…all the crap I was probably supposed to be doing anyway, the more made-of-idiocy I think this whole resolution idea is.

There has GOT to be a better way. But if anyone suggests a life coach or Oprah's magazine, I might have to reach across the internet and give you my best mom slap upside your head. And don’t think I can’t. We’re very high tech around here…

PS: Do men worry about this crap???? My life experience tells me no, not so much.

PPS: Please share your best get-your-life-and-stuff-under-control advice in the comments. Also feel free to share what DID NOT work for you.

This is my new goal. Don't sit down when I get home from work. Go right to my room, change my clothes, put on my tennis shoes, not may slippers. I am more inclined to find something to do while standing than sitting. And I will go out side more readily. Also just starting is half the battle of decluttering. It gets kind of interesting as you go along and become reaquainted with your stuff.

In all honesty, I avoid resolutions. Why would I intentionally set myself up for failure just to have another "guilt stick" to beat myself with? Actually, i am so good at goal setting already so why would I want to confine it to January...LOL.

AND a big fat NO I'm almost positive men/boys don't give a crap about any of this stuff. Maybe my goal should be "to try and be as content as a man." Ya right...maybe i could try it for a day for starters.

Schedule some event at your house. My friends swear by this method for getting their houses in order. I however prefer the get mad method or the watch TV method. I generally try to stay laid back/apathetic to our clutter but that eventually leads to over the top can't stand it anymore emotions where at that point I'm fuming with energy and go around like a crazy woman throwing stuff away. This motivates my family into action as they don't like the threat of their things being tossed. When we do have events at our house, the clutter usually ends up in paper bags that get stashed in the bedroom. This is the TV method. At some later date, I put on a favorite movie or taped program and sort through the bags one by one. It can take hours to do what should only take a few minutes but it adds some excitement to the job.

I've heard flylady.com is great!! I tried it briefly several years ago and liked it. Not exactly sexy, but a cute way to declutter and it works. Unfortunately I dropped out because it turns out my very nature goes against accomplishing anything on a regular basis.

Hey you wonderful person! The reason your list doesn't get done is that too many people -- like me, for instance, come to you with additional problems. And what do you do? You help them with their problems and list and there goes your list, shoved waaay to the back.
Now that you no longer need to worry about why your list is still long, I have another problem I'm sure you can help me with .....
